Although in Siegen and in its surroundings living expenses are lower than in most big German cities, you still have to take into account monthly expenses of about 600 € . Depending on your personal habits your expenses may exceed this sum of money.

On arrival in Germany you have to have at least 1.500 @ on you. You need this sum of money to pay (among others) for the German language course, the first rent, the first fee for your health insurance, traveling by public means of transportation and your living expenses. You might have to stay in a hotel for the first few days in case you do not find the right accommodation from the very beginning. Neither the University nor ELS are in a position to ensure accommodation or to rent lodging for you. So, you have to consider this aspect, as well. The existing student hostels are booked and occupied on a long-term basis. We can only offer you general assistance and advice.

We ask you not to count on the fact that you will be able to earn money by regular work since students/candidates have the right to work full-time only for three months per year. For the remaining duration there is only the possibility of part-time employment (up to 15 hours per week and up to 325 € per month). The great number of unemployed people in Germany makes finding a job rather difficult.

We offer you assistance in signing a health insurance that will offer you basic medical assistance in Germany. Without this insurance you will have to pay for each medical examination and medicine from your own pocket. For example, a single day of hospitalization costs about 265 €. So this health insurance is a must!
